homeIthemba Lethu Learning Centre provides extra tutoring in primary and high school in mathematics, science and life science (Grades 6 to 12) to low-income areas of Cape Town.

It was founded in 2004 by a group of teachers from African countries referred to the LEAP Science and Maths School by the Scalabrini Centre, a Cape-Town-based, non-governmental organization which helps refugees integrate into the South African community and economy.

Sammy Ntumba, the current leader of the Ithemba Lethu Learning Centre, was one of the first group of Learning Centre leaders where he has overseen the growth of the Centre to serve over 1 000 learners per year ranging from 12 to 18 years in Langa, Gugulethu, Nyanga, Crossroad, Philippi, Delft and Kalkfontein. In August 2015, the Ithemba Lethu Learning Centre (meaning “hope”) became a fully-fledged, free-standing initiative when the entity was registered as an independent, non-profit organization.
